I agree with Matt on most of the stuff, with the exception of the base stealing thing. There's no way to know why he was stealing those bases, and I'm sure he was doing it to be a tool, but then again if the guy wants to pad his stats to get the hell out of Washington I say do it. I just don't know if it warrants being thrown at twice in the same game.

The "crybaby retaliation" is a bit sad...just because you're getting your ass kicked or just lost your temper in general. If you're hitting a guy because he deliberately tried to put on of your guys out, it's cool to plunk him next time he steps up (but like Matt suggested DON'T THROW AT HIS HEAD) but if you're plunking him just just because your team sucks, that's poor sportsmanship. By adults, and by adults who make millions of dollars.

My conclusion first: Morgan had what was coming to him, and Volstad also was likely prepared for the result.

A sidenote: My dad takes a hard line on the unwritten rules. In the Veto house, we tend to hate pitchers because we were all outfielders and I think it's ridiculous that Greg Maddux gets strikes off the black because "He's Greg Maddux." That aside, I'm not sure I agree with my father's take:

"If the pitcher can stand up there and throw a ball at you in the batter's box, why would it be wrong to `accidentally' let go of the bat in his general direction."

I think mainly because it's a bat, but I get his point.

What I am for: I understand retaliation for protection purposes -- you hit my all-star, I hit yours. You hit my pitcher, I hit yours. You spike a guy, run into a catcher with forearms above the shoulders, or take out anyone's knees on the bases, you're going to get plunked. If you steal signs from second, you're going to get it, and you should know it. All of this comes with a pitch in the butt or lower leg. Keep it down.

What I'm against: I'm much less amused with the "cry-baby retaliation" -- hitting a guy because he hits two or three homers in a game (stupid!), steals a base, or bunts in an "out of hand" game "when out of hand" doesn't seem to have any agreed upon definition. Play to win, but don't be dumb about it.

Which brings me to the gray area: Morgan is a douche, and there's no way in hell he was trying to help his team win by stealing bases. He was being a jag bag about it. Did he deserve to get hit? Maybe. Maybe not. I think it was the mounting of emotions more than anything else that led to that. Should a guy get plunked for "pimping" a homer or "showing up" a pitcher? I don't know. Can I throw my bat at Jose Valverde?

So shouldn't they just document all of this stuff so that there is no disagreement as to what's cool and what isn't? Of course they should know the rules, (you could always just not be a jerk and then you wouldn't have to worry about it) but then again if enough guys are still doing it the maybe it needs to be written down?

Morgan is a punk for sure, but I can't blame him. I don't feel SORRY for the guy, but they did throw at him twice. And, baseball does need less of the guys who don't respect the game and a LOT more that do.

I love this topic. They talk about it often on XM. The biggest "rule" is not to show somebody up or act as if you are bigger than the game.
I agree with you to a point when you say Morgan was trying to help his team win. Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron were famous for doing everything to win. Lets get one thing straight Nyjor Morgan is neither of those guys. I also understand his point of charging and was rooting for him a bit...until he threw his arms up after the whole thing was done. He is a clown and a thug, and hope he is treated as so when his contract expires.
As for showing up people that goes for umps as well. thats why Howard got tossed for throwing his hands up the other night. They can say pretty much anything as long as they dont turn to face the ump showing aggression. Ive heard lots of stories of catchers arguing balls and strikes with umps as long as they dont leave their squatting position.
And their is also that one rule they let everyone in on in the movie Bull Durham. Never call him a Cocksucker.

CF:

It's a waste either way, and I can save everyone the drama right now and just say the White Sox won't make the playoffs anyway. And it isn't like if they do it'll be all of his doing. If by some miracle they do make it, it will be because of their pitching.

But I suppose if you have the money to spend, it will sell tickets, but it won't sell enough to offset the cost.

The only thing to consider is this: "is it worth it for the White Sox?"

My answer is....if it gets them in the playoffs, it's worth it. If it doesn't get them in the playoffs and they have to pay 3.8 million for about a month of service, it's clearly not worth it.

I really don't think there will be enough time to enjoy a full Kenny/Ozzie/Manny meltdown.

Cubs somewhat have a future. I like Starlin Castro and Tyler Colvin. Just Colvin's defense kills him from having a great WAR season.

Pitching wise I think you guys really need some help. Not really the young pitcher that pops out at you. Blow this up keep Castro and Colvin find a way to build your system again. With the contract the Cubs gave Soriano it might be hard to get rid of him.

Well either way we're glad to have you around.

Cubs fans: Sportsnation did a poll on the future of our team. There's no direct URL so go to

http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/polls

and on the left hand side of the page about halfway down you'll find a link that says "The Future of the Cubs".

As of Sunday night, 46% of America says they need to start from scratch and 93% say they either need to start from scratch or need a lot of work but the core is there. Interesting.

I agree with you. I enjoyed Lou being with us. I watched the game the day you guys went hoping I would see you all.
They were talking how he is the first mgr to lead the cubs to 3 consecutive playoffs in over 100 years. That really says something.

They were talking how he is the first mgr to lead the cubs to 3 consecutive playoffs in over 100 years. That really says something.

Andy,

Good article.

It's definitely been entertaining to see him manage the Cubs. I think it's cool that our bus trip participants got to see his last win.

Neels,

My grandfather used to go to spring training every year and loved it. We're pleased that you enjoy the site. And keep it coming with the comments it's nice to read additional genuine baseball knowledge.

Wow, Fred McGriff? Hadn't seen his late night infomercial in a while. He had 21.5% of votes the first year of eligibilty. As far as Lee goes, it depends on how many of these steroid monkeys from the late 90's and early 00's get in. If the writers have a tendency to keep them out of the Hall of Fame, then a lot of players like Derrek Lee and Fred McGriff have a better shot at getting in. And for the record, McGriff has the most career home runs out of anybody eligible for the Hall with the exception of Mark McGwire.

And who knows? Maybe he'll have a resurgence in Atlanta and be able to get that lifetime average up and pad some of his other stats.

I dont think that 282 average is a hall of fame number but combine that with 450 home runs and 2800 hits and he is on the same level as Fred McGriff. Definately not first ballot but he is in the conversation. I think the Braves are done as well but when he hits the open market if he has those numbers with 2 more rings he will be in the hall of fame.

I love this page. It seems like all I read is this and mlbtraderumors.com. I have only been reading your stuff cause I know you but I'll have to start with the other guys.

I am doing really well. You need to come to Florida for spring training. If you have never been to spring training there is nothing in the world like it. The only thing that compares to it is the playoffs.

Neels,

I don't say he gets a ring. Sorry. The Braves aren't all that at all. They're made up to get a fair distance in but that's it man. Still like the Phillies to win it now? I'm not thinking a whole lot about the NL at the moment, because let's be honest: the AL is a lot more intriguing right now. Texas is great, the Yankees, then the Twins and of course Tampa is fiesty. I think the White Sox blew their chance to be on that level BUT then again they have had a couple of 15-2 streaks this year to say the least.

Now, about Derrek Lee. You're right, the draft pick they would have gotten from him would definitely be a lot lower if he were allowed to "hit" one more month. Overall, it was a matter of when not if, and the Cubs for some reason thought they had offered enough of an opportunity to deal him to LAA but he wanted no part of it. So he stays in the NL, and the idea of settling into a DH position never comes up and crushes him at 35 by making him lazy. That being said, he doesn't end up becoming a legend. I don't know, you think a .282 lifetime (which could get lower) makes the Hall of Fame? I don't.

So now the Cubs move on with much newer and much shinier parts. But as this is true, how much steel wool and Mother's Aluminum Polish are we talking about here?

Thanks for reading the blogs man good to see you're checking the site out. How are things?

Meehan

P.S. The people at Mother's Aluminum Polish - Thank you so very very much for the fruit basket. Steel Wool: Ball's in your court, poser...I think you we all know you have soap in there...

I completely agree. I would rather have these guys than the draft pick we would get next year for him. I am also happy we are looking at blowing this team up as much as we can. That is the only way it is going to change moving forward.

As far as D-Lee being a hall of famer... Most likely he will play another playing another 4 or 5 years possibly hitting 450 homeruns, and maybe 2800 hits.

There is an outside chance depending on if he gets another ring with a top profile team.

I think we should mention that on tonight's show we discussed the Jim Edmonds thing and we all pretty much don't remember the media assaulting him like he claims.

To be perfectly honest with you, all I remember was he got the standard grief from the die hard fans from coming over from a team that we all hate more than anything in the world, but even before the time he hit his first home run, all of that disappeared.

It's your standard "blame the media" card, and it's a crock. According to these guys the media is responsible for when they hit .235, which is ridiculous.

I think that if he made it more intense each time it would be cooler. For his first entry he could run out like he has been doing, then maybe the second time ride dirtbike to the mound, then the third time he could be in a tank.

Bear in mind of course that these are all horrible ideas.

No, no, and no.

A lot of Phillies fans are also Eagles fans and by almost every account in sports history, Eagles fans are the worst and it's not even close.

Mets fans are assholes because they're from New York so they have somewhat of an excuse.

But Phillies fans...no we are not nearly as hateful (and violent) as Phillies fans.

Again, if you go back and look at the reports, it was totally in jest. He meant it about the Cubs fans, not the Cub players. I've been to well over 200 games at Riverfront/Cinergy/GABP. By far, the most rude and obnoxious fans are from the Mets and Cubs. No other team's fans are even close. Not even Phillies fans.

I agree with the point about being impartial. This is hard for me because I have a lot of friends in the Cincinnati area. But this year they have been much more cocky. Votto was flying under the radar for a while but that comment about Byrd kind of blew his humbleness quotient.

We're well aware that the Cubs haven't won a WS since 1908. All Corey was trying to say is that when September rolls around there's not a whole lot of pennant race experience on that team.

And they're annoying.

You mean they will melt down the same way the Cubs have for the past 100+ years?

Spoken like a true Flubs fan. BP should not have ran his mouth but come on. Votto's comments were in jest...or did you fail to read that part of the story? Good luck next year. Maybe the Flubs will win 65 games. Nice series this past weekend, by the way.

I agree I can't wait for the baseball playoffs this year. I actually do hope I'm wrong and the Rays do well because I hate the Yankees like the plague.

They have been hot all season. As a team their pitchers have the lowest ERA in the American League. 2nd in baseball behind the Cardinals.

Not to mention they took 2 of 3 this weekend to take over the best record in baseball.

I understand your "feeling" that they wont last in the playoffs, I have that same feeling. (I think it is born in us since we are Cubs fans) But the truth is we have to look at the numbers, They are built very well for the post season They have 3 starters who have a chance of being 15 game winners and 1 starter with the chance of being a 18 or 19 game winner.

The AL is loaded but the Rays are for real this year and personally I think they are the best team in baseball.
The great thing about it is we will find out here in a couple months the end result.

Yeah they are hot now but I'm not sure I trust them in the postseason this year. The AL is too loaded this year so at best I'll say they are one and done.

This is what I have gathered about this in addition to this post:

Andy is right: Every team has either one or two (or no) players of oriental descent on their squad. By comparison, there are about 7 or 8 (and usually a lot more) players on every squad that are of Latino/Hispanic descent, so it isn't always necessary for every single MLB team to have translators that should interpret for them if the team feels like they might juts get in the way.

But...certainly with the amount of money the average player makes at the MLB level, I would think that if any of them had an issue with not being able to understand something that would help them do their job and rocket to stardom (much in the way Pujols has) they would certainly be able to have their agent contact the franchise to make sure that they did have the translators they needed.

First of all, that image is nightmare fuel. Guillen's entire face looks like a gimp mask. Also, you're right; his statements hold no water. For the Spanish-speaking players, there are plenty of other Spanish-speaking players around who are bilingual and can help translate. There usually are no other Japanese-speaking players around, and if there are, I wonder how many of them can speak English as well?

I came off sounding a little bit silly and uniformed around the 11:30 - 12:20 part of this broadcast. The point I was trying to make is the way the rules are drawn up (mostly because of the way the players union drafts them) even the MLB statutes allow the players complete control after a certain point. And it doesn't allow Selig to make exceptions for certain problem players.

For example this same rule would allow a player like AJ Pierczinski from the White Sox to have a bad year, to throw a huge fit, act a fool by doing something to offend the fans. Then he'd have the opportunity to deny a trade.

I'm not saying AJ would do that, but I'm using it as an example of the 10 year vet / 5 year tenure policy that allows a player to do that sort of thing.

Now, this rule is ASSUMING that there aren't going to be any disgruntled veterans who become angry down the road. It's assuming all of these players are going to be poster boys for the nutcase community, much like a Milton Bradley or a Manny Ramirez, who MLB knows will be shipped around before they would be eligible to deny a trade.

I'm glad I don't have to write that legislation. Those sessions must be awfully sloppy.
